There is a science that explains why nations arm themselves for wars they do not want, why rivals who would both profit from peace choose ruin instead, and why the most powerful technology in human history cannot be slowed down by anyone. It is not economics. It is not psychology. It is not history. It is game theory.

And before you dismiss it as academic mathematics, understand what it actually is. Game theory is the study of what intelligent rivals do to each other when each one's outcome depends on the other's move. That is not a classroom subject. That is the entire structure of power. Every negotiation you have entered, every rivalry you have watched,

every war in recorded history, and every arms race now unfolding between Washington and Beijing, is a game being played on a board most of the participants cannot see. You are playing whether you understand the game or not. The only question is whether you will learn to read the board before someone else uses it against you.

The board you did not choose Most men imagine power as a series of isolated contests. A negotiation here. A rivalry there. A war somewhere distant, decided by leaders and generals. This is an illusion. Power is not a collection of events. It is a structure of incentives, and incentives produce behavior as reliably as gravity produces falling

objects. Change what a man gains by cooperating and what he loses by trusting, and you change what he does, regardless of his character, his intentions, or his wisdom. Game theory simply makes this structure visible. Consider the simplest and most terrible game ever formalized: the Prisoner's Dilemma.
