The Constructed Self Is Not You
Consider the beliefs you hold most firmly right now. Your values. Your ambitions. Your definition of success. Your sense of what you deserve and what you do not. Your deepest fears.
Now trace each one back to its origin.
Every single one was given to you. By your parents. By
your culture. By the religion or ideology you were raised inside. By your peer group. By the accumulated rewards and punishments of your particular upbringing in your particular time and place.
You did not choose any of it. It arrived before you had the capacity to evaluate it. And it lodged itself so deeply that it began to feel like you.
This
is the first and most critical insight of sovereign identity.
